Laurence was a student at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, from his enrollment in 1886 to his graduation in 1892. In 1912 he graduated from the College of Medicine in Newcastle as a ‘Practitioner of Fifteen Years Standing’ (a programme by which experienced practitioners could be examined by degree awarding institutions without having to study the full programme). He graduated with an M.D., M.R.C.S., and L.R.C.P.
Laurence held several civilian posts prior to joining the RAMC, including roles at East London Hospital for Children, Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Farnborough, and finally Sheerness.
Laurence entered the war in France on 18th April 1918. He died in service of pneumonia on 15th November 1918 aged 49 years old.
