Biography

Howard was the son of Edward and Anne Cunningham Hunter. He graduated from the College of Medicine (M.B., B.S.) in April 1911 and afterwards studied surgery at St Bartholomew’s, London, and in Vienna. His brother George Edward Hunter, and his sister's fiancé Lieutenant A. R. Garton, also fell on the same day. He played on the University's football team as a defender and the cricket team as a bat and bowler.

Howard was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers on the 27th of April 1906. He received promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on the 1st of June 1907. He was further promoted to Captain on 22nd January 1912.

Howard was killed in action in April 1915, aged 26 years old. He was leading his men in a raid into German territory and was shot in the leg, then fatally in the chest, dying immediately.
