John was born to James Henry and Margaret Horsley, of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was educated at Trent College in Derbyshire, where he excelled at rugby and cricket. While studying at the College of Medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne he regularly played both sports.
John was one of the College’s first students to obtain a commission at the outbreak of war, and was quickly drafted into the Border Regiment as a Second Lieutenant in August 1914.
John was killed in action on the 16th May 1915, aged 22 years old.
