John was born in 1888 in Gateshead to John, a Grocer, and Jane. He had four younger siblings: William, Sophia, Alice, and Henry. He was educated at Gateshead Grammar School, then Armstrong College between 1906 and 1908 where he trained to be a teacher.
John died on 22nd August 1917.
John is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
John is also commemorated on a stained glass window in St. George's Church, Gateshead. His name appeared on a memorial in his former School, Gateshead Grammar School, but this memorial appears to have been destroyed when the School closed.
