John was born in Lincoln to William Arthur and Gertrude Helena (nee Sellers). He had two siblings, Dorothy Lilian and Warren. They lived at 1 The Drive, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, and held a scholarship at Armstrong College, where he had passed his first BSc examination.
John was employed at Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson's works when war broke out. John was one of the first in the University Officers' Training Corps to apply for a commission, which he obtained on 15th August 1914. He had joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, 3rd Battalion, but was attached to the 2nd Battalion and left England for France on 12th May 1915.
John was killed in action at Hooge, Belgium.
John is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
John's name is also inscribed on the Cenotaph in his home town of Whitley Bay.
