Walter was born in Elswick to Walter and Jane Roan. He had one sister Margaret, and three brothers, Charles, Robert and James. He was educated at Rutherford College for Boys, then Armstrong College. He later worked as a teacher at Walkergate County School, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Walter was killed in action at Le Sars on 28th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
Walter is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in Somme, France.
