Charles was the only son of Charles and Emily Leslie who lived at Glenholme, West Avenue, Harton, South Shields.
Charles was educated at Westoe Secondary School, South Shields, then Armstrong College.
Charles joined the West Yorkshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He later transferred to the 5th Battalion where he attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. Charles died on 24th April 1918 aged 21.

Charles is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial in Somme, France.
Charles is also commemorated on a plaque remembering pupils of Westoe Secondary School (now installed in Harton Technology College).
