James was the son of James Hay, a gardener from Houghton Hall, Carlisle, and Jane Hay. He had a younger sister named Elizabeth. In 1911 he was working in Shropshire as a School Master Assistant, Grammer School. In March, 1917, he married Catherine Sutton. His last known address according to the National Probate Calendar was 23 Brandling Park, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
He attended Armstrong College between 1906 and 1909, where he studied mathematics, botany, English, ancient history, French, modern history and Italian. He gained an M.Litt. in June 1909.
James attained the rank of Second Lieutenant in the York and Lancaster Regiment, 4th Battalion. He died on 29th October 1918 aged 31.
