William was educated at Stockton Secondary School the Armstrong College. William was the son of William Hansell, a ship joiner, and Alice Hansell.
His last known address was 27 Walter Street, Stockton-on-Tees as according to the National Probate Calendar. In 1911 he was working as an Uncertificated Teacher.
William was commissioned into the Durham Light Infantry, 6th Battalion and attained the rank of Captain. William was killed in action on 27th May 1918.
