John was born in Tynemouth, son of Robert and Elizabeth Donaldson of 10 Albury Park Road Tynemouth and 105 Park Crescent, North Shields, Northumberland. He had six siblings, Isabella Shaw, Elizabeth Simpson, Alexander, Georgina, Mary Louisa and Arthur Donaldson. In the 1911 census it states that John's mum, Elizabeth is a widow and she has lost two children; Isabella and Alexander.
Before the war, John was a clerk at Borough Accountant Office.
John enlisted on 21st April 1915. He served with the Tyneside Scottish. John was killed in action, sources state only that he died within the 'France and Flanders' Theatre of War.

John is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial in France.
There is also a private memorial plaque to John at St.Augustin's, North Shields.
