Frank was born in Jesmond, Newcastle, to Dr. Ralph Young. Frank attended Rochdale Higher Grade School, and then Oldham Hulme Grammar School from 1896 to 1899. He began his studies in Medicine in the academic session 1912-1913, but left to join the war effort.
He was married to May, of Clyde House, Bishop Auckland, in 1914, and fathered a daughter in early 1916.
Frank was granted a commission with the 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers in February 1915, and was most likely a reserve member prior to the war. He deployed to France on the 11th May 1916. Frank was killed in action in July 1916, aged 32 years old. This was during the Battle of Delville Wood phase of the Somme, which lasted from 15th July to 3rd September 1916.
Frank's brother Henry also died in the war.
