Cyril was the eldest son of Dr. R.M. and Mrs Young. Whilst at Armstrong College he lived at 36 Fern Avenue, Newcastle. He studied Mathematics, Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and gained his BSc. in 1907. Before the war, Cyril was in partnership with a Mr Hodgkin, of Darlington as a consulting Electrical Engineer.
Cyril died on 1st July 1917 from wounds received on 7th June, when a shell struck his billet. Shell fragments caused severe injuries to his left shoulder and thigh. Another officer who he was speaking to was killed, as well as four other men.
