Arthur was bron in 1891 at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the son of William and Selina Young, of Aldersyde, Alnwick, Northumberland. his father died on 5th October 1897. Arthur and his mother lived with his three siblings, Ada K Young, Florence E Young and Constance J Young, and their servant called Hannah Sawyer. They lived at 15 Osbourne Avenue, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Arthur died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 aged 24. He was in command of "A" Company for the assault. The opening phase of the Somme was called the Battle of Albert and lasted from 1-13th July 1916.
Arthur is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in Somme, France.
Arthur is also commemorated on the war memorial in Alnwick.
