George began his studies in Medicine in 1904 and throughout his medical studies won a number of prizes and scholarships. In his first year in Newcastle, he won 3rd prize and 1st class honours in Physics during the Winter Session 1904-1905 and 1st prize and 1st class honours in Practical Physics during the Summer session in 1905. During his second year he claimed 2nd prize with 1st class honours for Practical Histology in summer session of 1906. In his final year George won two scholars prizes: the Gibbs Scholars prize and the Charlton prize in 1909. George graduated in July 1909 with an M.B. and B.S.
At the time of his death George was married to Mrs A. Wood of Saint Andrews, near Timaru, New Zealand.
George died of his wounds on 11th November 1916.
