Ernest was born on 6th June 1890 in Gateshead. He was the son of John, a Chief Engineer, and Eliza Emily Watson. He was an artist and at the time of his death four of his pictures were hanging in the Laing Art Gallery.
He was educated at Armstrong College and attended the University Officers' Training Corps whilst at the College. He was the first to be appointed to the Reserve of Officers in August 1912, and was called up in August 1914.
Ernest served as Second Lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, "D" Company serving in France. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Aisne on 19th September 1914 during a bayonet charge whist reinforcing the Worcester and Wiltshire Regiments.
His parents received many appreciative letters of sympathy from the authorities of Armstrong College and others regarding their son. Professor Wright, of the Department of Education, wrote: "He left a favourable and interesting impression on our minds for his steadiness and for his loyalty. We are proud of the sacrifice he made for England in her time of need." The Honorary Secretary of the Old Students' Union of the University of Durham, said: "The college is honoured in having so gallant a son."
Ernest is buried in the Vailly British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
