When war broke out Herbert was at Armstrong College, preparing for his BSc. examination, and intending to move into the teaching profession.
He was known to all his friends as 'Bert' and was a committed Methodist. At Benwell Methodist Church, he was a Sunday school teacher and Christian Endeavourer, and for six years fulfilled the duties of Organist. During the few months he was away, his letters home and to his friends all were expressive of his interest in the Church and those connected.
Herbert died on 5th October 1916.
Herbert is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in the Somme, France.
