Joseph was born on 13th December 1882 in Haxby, Yorkshire. He was educated at North Eastern County School (now Barnard Castle School) for six years between 1893 and 1899, before studying Mining Engineering at Armstrong College.
He became a Mining Engineer, working and living in Hooton Pagnell, Yorkshire. He married Grace Dalton in the spring of 1914.
At the outbreak of war, Joseph applied for a commission in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was gazetted Second Lieutenant on 29th August 1914. Joseph died during the Battle of the Somme whilst his Brigade was attacking in the Thiepval area on 4th July 1916, aged 32.
Joseph is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial in France, close to the site of the Battle of the Somme.
