Douglas was born in 1891 to Andrew and Alice Mary Tweedie. He was the youngest of 5 siblings, all of whom trained to be teachers. He had 3 sisters, Emma, Elizabeth, and Alice, and an older brother James.
He trained as a teacher at Sunderland Day Training College and Armstrong College and then taught at Redby County School, Sunderland.
Douglas died of his wounds in No. 42 Casualty Clearing Station at Arras, France on 1st May. He was 25.
Douglas is buried in the Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France
