The information displayed here is at the time of death.
James was born in Easington, Durham in 1883. He was the youngest son of James, a Schoolmaster. He had two older brothers, Henry and Richard, an older sister, Selina, and a younger sister, Anna.
He was educated at King Edward VI School, Morpeth, then Armstrong College where he trained as a teacher. He later worked as a Schoolmaster in Bedlington and was a member of South Northumberland Cricket and Tennis Club.
James was killed in action on 18th October 1915, aged 32. A mistake appears to have been made on the memorial, giving James' middle initial as "M" instead of "N".
James is buried in Hebuterne Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
A family headstone commemorating James is in St. Nicholas' Churchyard, Gosforth and his name is inscribed on a plaque in the church itself.
