Ernest was the son of Bernard, a Watch Maker, and Sarah Tragheim. He had a younger brother Lionel, an older brother Edgar, and two older sisters, Gertrude and Laura. He was Jewish and his parents had emigrated from their birth pace of Germany according to the 1901 census, but in the 1911 census claimed to be of Russian descent.
Ernest was a talented chemist and was studying at Armstrong College, having first been educated at Gateshead Grammar School. Ernest was killed in action aged 21.
Ernest is buried in Tranchee De Mecknes Cemetery, Aix-Noulette, Pas de Calais, France.
