Walter was born in Darlington in 1892. He was the son of Alfred Septimus, Baker & Confectioner, and Ann Sarah Thompson. He had an older brother Richard, and two younger sisters, Mary, Marjorie, and Joan, and a younger brother, Raymond. He was educated at Albert Road School, Darlington, then at Armstrong College, where he gained a BSc.
Walter was wounded and reported missing during fighting in Gallipoli. His date of death is recorded as 6th August 1915.
Walter is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
Walter's name is also inscribed on a plaque in St. Cuthbert's Church, Darlington.
