Ronald was born in Newcastle upon Tyne to the Rev. George and Mary Taylor. He had three siblings, Doris Gwendoline, Louisa Enid and Geffrey Fred. He was educated at Royal Grammar School in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he served as the Head Prefect and was captain of both the school cricket and rugby teams. Ronald was a student at at the College of Medicine from 1914, however he left his studies at the College in 1915 to aid in the war effort.
Ronald was commissioned into 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on the 28th January 1915, and went on to see action in France. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on the 7th July 1916. The opening phase of the Somme was called the Battle of Albert and lasted from 1-13th July 1916.
