John was born in Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne and he lived with his family at 6 Norfolk Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the son of John, a ship plumber, and Mary Jane Tate. He had three siblings, Sarah Hogarth Tate, William White Tate and Charles Fenwick Tate.
John trained to be a teacher at Armstrong College and went on to teach at Spittal County School, Northumberland.
John was killed in action in Aisne on 27th May 1918 during the Battle of Aisne.
