George was the son of Emily Sarah and Reverend Canon Sterling MBBS of the Church Missionary Society, Gaza, Palestine. At the time of their marriage they are registered as living at 44 Larkspur Terrace Newcastle upon Tyne. George attended the Pocklington School, Yorkshire, and then Armstrong College in Newcastle upon Tyne.
George was commissioned from the University's Officer Training Corp to the Northumberland Fusiliers 11th Battalion, as a temporary Second Lieutenant, on 16th November 1914. He had attained the rank of Captain at the time of his death. He was awarded the Military Cross in September 1917 for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of two platoons. According to the citation for his Military Cross in the London Gazette, "Having reached the objective of his attach, he discovered that both his flanks were in the air, and that the enemy were advancing in force. He held on under heavy fire until ordered to withdraw and dig himself in, in line with the troops on his flanks." He was commended for setting a fine example of skilful leadership and control under very difficult conditions. George was killed in action in Italy on 27th October 1918.
George is buried in the Tezze British Cemetery in Italy.
