Edward was the son of the Reverend Edward Henry and Emily Smith. Edward studied at Armstrong College between 1908 and 1911, obtaining a BSc. in June 1911.
During WWI he served with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), 8th Battalion. He served in Gallipoli, Egypt and France from 1915 to 1916 and was wounded in 1915. Edward was killed in action at the Somme on 28th September 1916 aged 25.
Edward is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in the Somme, France.
