Douglas was the Son of David and Mary Ann Scott. In 1891 his family lived at 32 Norwood Grove, Headingley with Burley, in 1901 they lived at 8 Lyndhurst Gardens in Glasgow, and in 1911 they lived at 9 Victoria Terrace, Durham. In 1911 he is listed on the census as a dental pupil, although he is not listed as a student at the College of Medicine until 1913.
In 1914 he applied for a commission in the army. He was killed in action in April 1918.
