Thomas was the son of Thomas B. and Harriette Rutherfoord, and husband of Mary Frances Rutherfoord. Two of his brothers, David and Alfred, also fell.
Thomas studied at St Thomas’ Hospital, and took his final exams for a Bachelor in Surgery and a Bacchelor in Medicine at the College of Medicine in April and September 1902. He was a member and Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians.
Thomas was first commissioned on 31st January 1903 and promoted to Captain on 31st January 1906, then to Major on 31st July 1914. He sailed from England 11th August 1914 and served continuously abroad until his death during the final stage of Sir Allenby's advance through Palestine and Syria. He was attached to 11th Cavalry Brigade at his death. He was mentioned in despatches.
Thomas died of malaria while in command of 11th Cavalry Brigade Field Ambulance, on 18th October 1918 aged 39 years old.
