William was born in Newcastle. He was commissioned from the officer cadet unit into the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917.
Flying an SE5A of 85th Squadron, William was killed in aerial combat south east of Armentieres in Northern France on 13th July 1918 aged 20.
William is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Northern France.
