William was the son of Andrew and Amelia Reid (nee Kerr). He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and was attended Armstrong College. William held the rank of Pioneer in the Royal Engineers, 2nd Special Company (Chemist’s Corps), and served in France from 1916 to 1917. William died of his wounds on 4th May 1917 aged 23.
William is buried in the Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
