George was the son of George and Elizabeth J. Raine (née Edmundson). He had an older brother, James E. who also served in the Durham Light Infantry as a Major, and two sisters Margaret Galley & Annie Elinor Raine. He was educated at Tynemouth School then Epworth College, Rhyl.
George was commissioned in November 1914 just before his 18th birthday from the University's University Officers' Training Corps. Whilst attached to Durham Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion, he served near Hooge, Belgium. He was seriously wounded on this attachment and in September 1915 was sent home. He then returned to the Western Front on Good Friday April 21st 1916.
George was wounded in an attack on the village of Serre at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916. He died of his wounds the following day on 2nd July 1916 aged 19.
George is buried in the Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension in the Somme region of France.
George is also commemorated on the Pillar 1914-1918 and Roll of Honour in Tynemouth Village.
