Ernest was born in 1882 to Robert Henry and Sarah Pigford. He had one brother, Frederick, who worked as a painter, and three sisters, Edith, Dorothy and Ethel. Before the war, he had been a school teacher and a house painter.
Ernest was killed during the Battle of Jutland, when the Black Prince sank on 31st May 1916. He was aged 34.

Ernest is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent and in Stanley (Harelaw) Cemetery, County Durham.
