Alfred was the son of Alfred and Ellen Pick. He had a sister, Rose Harriet, and a brother, Robert Noel. He was educated at Whitley Memorial School, Bedlington and Armstrong College.
Alfred served in the Durham Light Infantry, 3rd Battalion and was on active service in France, Egypt and the Balkans with the Yorkshire Light Infantry, 1st Battalion for 3 ½ years. He made the rank of Lieutenant on 12th October 1915 and from 1915 to 1917 was attached to the Royal Flying Corps (later Royal Air Force) in the Balkans, serving in Macedonia and Egypt from 1917 to 1918.
Just after the end of the war, Alfred was accidently killed whilst flying at Eastchurch, Kent, on 2nd December 1918 aged 22.

Alfred is buried in the North part of St. Cuthbert's Churchyard, Bedlington, Northumberland.
