Andrew was the son of Andrew and Margaret Ohlsson. He had two sisters, Edith Isabella and Lena Bertha Ohlsson. His father kept a boarding house for seamen at Ferry Approach, South Shields.
He was educated at Westoe Secondary School, South Shields, then at Armstrong College (1907-1910), where he gained a BSc. in June 1910. When Andrew was 22, his occupation was listed as a Trained Certified Assistant Master.
Andrew was recorded as missing believed killed on 26th May 1915 aged 27.

Andrew is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Andrew is also commemorated on a plaque to those fallen who attended Westoe Secondary School (now installed in Harton Technology College), where he was a former pupil.
