Lawrence was the son of John and Emily Nicholson. Lawrence had one sister, Winifred Muriel Emily. He had been working as an Accountant Clerk when war broke out.
Lawrence enlisted at the Mansion House in Middlesex and served as a Private attached to the Wiltshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion. Lawrence was killed in action near Arras, France on 9th April 1917.

Lawrence is buried in the Neuville-Vitasse Road Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.
Lawrence is commemorated on a stained glass window in St. Nicholas' Church, Gosforth, which was commissioned by his parents.
