Philip was the son of William and Eleanor I. Newbold. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford and Armstrong College. He lived for a time in Kesima, Kenya Colony.
Philip served in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, 7th Battalion. He was promoted to temporary Second Lieutenant on 25th January 1915. Philip was killed in action on 13th July 1916 aged 29.
Philip is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in Somme, France.
