John was born on 2nd June 1891 in Culham, Berkshire to Frederick and Emily Mitchell (née Hemmings). He was educated at St. Wilfred's School, Haywards Heath, then boarded at St Johns Training College for Male Students, Vicarage Road, Battersea, which was a training college for Teachers.
When war broke out, he was working as a teacher.
John was killed in action at Loos on 25th September 1915.
John is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
