The information displayed here is at the time of death.
James was the son of George M. and Agnes Mitchell of 27 Beechwood Street, Sunderland. He appears to have briefly enrolled at the College of Medicine, before leaving his studies to join the war effort.
James was killed in action on the 10th August 1918, aged 19.
Medical Gazette Vol XIX, p. 11, Obituary: ‘…Although 2nd Lieut. Mitchell was not with us for a very long period before joining the forces, he made many friends who will feel his loss keenly, and who will not forget the many happy times spent together. His whole aim was to get to France into the thick of the fighting, and it was whilst engaging enemy aeroplanes that he met his death, having just received his observer’s wings the day previous. A keen athelete, a lover of sport, and a good student, were few of his many attributes which portrayed him as “one of the best.” Very deep sympathy is felt for his parents in this their second loss, an elder son, another medical student, also giving his life for his country a short time ago. R.C.B.’
Wavans British Cemetery
James is also remembered at Bede School, Sunderland and at St George’s Presbyterian Church, Sunderland.
