John was the son of James Percy, a Medical Practitioner, and Mary Jane Milne. He had four sisters, Gladys Muriel Mary, Ruby Agnes, Thelma Mary Ethel and Rita Latour Milne.
He was educated at St. Cuthbert's Grammar School, Newcastle, and the studied Electrical Engineering at Armstrong College.
John was killed in action on 25th September 1916 aged 20, in the Somme. He was fighting during the Battle of Morval phase which lasted from 25th September to 28th September 1916.
John is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in Somme, France.
