Noel Edward Mather was most commonly known by his middle name, Edward. He was the son of Philip Edward and Laura Emma Mather (née Robson) who were married in 1877. Noel had three sisters Maude, Laura, and Muriel, and one brother, Philip
He was educated at Uppingham School, Uppingham, Rutland, then Armstrong College, where he studied forestry. He was employed as a solicitor when war broke out. He was a member of Northumberland County Cricket Club and also a member of Percy Park Rugby Club, and frequently played both for the County, and for the North against the South.
Noel was killed in action on 26th April 1915 aged 27.
Noel is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Noel is also commemorated on a plaque in St. George's Church, Jesmond, and a plaque in Northumberland County Cricket Club.
