Robert was the son of George and Margaret Johnson, who were registered at the time of their marriage as resident in Newcastle upon Tyne. He had three siblings, Agnes, George and Andrew.
Robert was killed in action in France on the 24th April 1917 aged 26 during the Battle of the Scarpe phase of the Battle of Arras, which lasted from 23-24th April 1917.
Robert is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in Pas De Calais in France.
