John was born in Torquay, Devon. He was the son of Colonel Montague Bertie Gosset Jackson, and Blanche Jackson. He also had a sister, Violet Mary.
John applied for a commission on the outbreak of war and was gazetted Second Lieutenant to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 5th Battalion on 26th August 1914. He was later promoted to Lieutenant on 20th May 1915.
John appears to have been wounded in battle on June 22nd 1915, and died of his wounds on 18th August 1915 aged 20.
