William was the son of John and Ellenor Hannah Hoole. He had a brother, John H Hoole and a sister Sarah E Hoole.
William was educated at Sunderland Bede Collegiate School, then Armstrong College, where he trained to be a teacher. He went on to become a teacher at St. Columba's School, Wallsend. On 3 Oct 1914, he married Margaret Hoole (nee Calvert), who previously lived at 6 Pallion Road, Sunderland. They had a daughter in March 1916, Eleanor Sarah Hoole. His last known address was 14 Hazledene Terrace, Sunderland.
William attained the rank of Lance Corporal in the Durham Light Infantry, 15th Battalion. He enlisted on 18 November, 1915. William died of his wounds on 7th May 1917 aged 29. He died at No 55, Fld Amb France.

William is buried in the Bucquoy Road Cemetery Ficheux in Pas De Calais France.
William is also commemorated on a plaque in Sunderland's Bede School (now Bede Campus, Sunderland College).
