Gordon was the son of Robert and Jessie Haswell, who lived at 27 Thornhill Gardens, Sunderland. He had two younger brothers: Robert Eric, and Frederick, who also served in World War I in the East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Battalion at the rank of Lieutenant. Frederick died the year before Gordon on 23rd April 1915 aged 19 years old.
Gordon attended Armstrong College between 1910 and 1913, where he gained a B.A. (2nd Class Honours) in June 1913. He was commissioned into the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 9th Battalion, and attained the rank of Captain.
Gordon was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 24. According to the National Probate Calendar he died in either France or Belgium.

Gordon is buried in the Norfolk Cemetery Becordel-Becourt in France.
