William was the son of John and Ellen Hancock of 34 Denmark Street, Gateshead.
Whilst at Armstrong College (1905 - 1908), he studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and English. He gained a BSc. in June 1908.
William was killed in action on 28th September 1917 at Ypres, aged 31. He was fighting in the phase of the Battle of Ypres (often known as the Third Battle of Ypres or Passchendaele) named the Battle of Polygon Woods which began on 26th September and ended on 3rd October 1917.
