John was the son of John and Clara Hamilton. He had four siblings, Jane, William Robson, Frazer and Clara. John was married to Marion C. Hamilton previously of 27 Cromwell Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.
John was killed in action during what was known as the First Battles of the Somme in the Battle of St Quentin phase, lasting from 21st to 23rd March 1918. It incorporates the German attack known as Operation Michael or Kaiserschlacht and subsequent fighting in the Somme.
