Thomas was the son of William Nottingham and Anne Elizabeth Gregory, who lived at 4 Studley Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne. He had three siblings, Mary Elizabeth, Nicoletta and James Henry. In 1911 he was enrolled on the Teaching course at Armstrong College.
Prior to his military service, Thomas attended the University's Officer Training Corps whilst at Armstrong College. He enlisted at the age of 20. He was commissioned into the Northumberland Fusiliers, 4th Battalion and later attained the rank of Captain.
Thomas died of his wounds on 22nd March 1918 aged 23.

Thomas is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in Pas De Calais, France.
