James was born in 1893 to James and Mary Gibson. He had two younger sisters, Emma Sarah Wilson Gibson and Winnifred Gibson.
He married Isabella May Gibson, who previously lived at 40 Albemarle Avenue, High West Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne.
James was announced missing near Wancourt on 8th March 1918. He was presumed dead in France and Flanders. His date of death is officially given as 29th March 1918 aged 25.
