Lionel attended the College of Medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne from 1910 to 1914.
At the outbreak of war, Lionel received a commission with the Durham Light Infantry. He was subsequently attached to 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, with whom he served with in France. Lionel was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 15th August 1915.
Lionel was killed in action on the 28/9th September 1915 in Hulloch, France, while leading his platoon of ‘bomb-throwers’ in a raid into German territory.
Lionel is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
