Charles attended Armstrong College between 1902 and 1905, where he studied mathematics and was awarded a BSc. in June 1905. He later returned to Armstrong College as a member of staff.
He married Lily R. Elliott, who previously lived at 54 Crown Street, Newcastle.
He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers, Z Special Company, at the rank of Pioneer. Z company was a unit that was given the responsibility of developing a British version of the German flamethrower that had been deployed on the Western Front.
He served in France from 1916 to 1917 and died of his wounds on 19th August 1917 aged 32.
