Louis was educated at Manchester Grammar School, Kings College London, and at Leeds University. He was already practicing medicine when he enrolled at the College of Medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne, but it is not clear from the sources where his initial medical training was obtained. Louis graduated as a Doctor in Medicine for 'Practitioners of 15 Years Standing', at the College of Medicine Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1905.
Louis was the husband of Mrs A Demetriadi, the daughter of Dr J R Parke of Tideswee.
When the West Riding Territorial Division mobilized in August 1914, he proceeded with it, entering the war in France on 11th April 1915, attached as medical officer to the 1/5th Duke of Wellington Regiment. He later took charge of the West Riding Casualty Clearing Station, where he remained until his health gave way. Returning to home service, he received the Territorial decoration, and then had to relinquish his commission owing to ill health.
Louis died at Southampton on 26th October 1918 aged 55 years old.
Louis is buried at Lindley (St. Stephen) Churchyard
